👋🏽 Welcome to The Folklore, our weekly newsletter where we talk about our journey of building Folklory, a startup that helps you turn family memories into podcasts. We’ll share weekly updates, wins, and learnings, so sign up if you’d like to hear from us.
Last week Folklory debuted at its very first wedding. Following our mission of “capturing and preserving family memories forever”, we wanted to create an audio guest book, capturing that night, for the couple to listen back to many years later.
Audio Guest Book
We’re all familiar with filling in guest books at weddings - you go write your wishes for the couple which they’ll read after the wedding. We wanted to re-create this experience where instead of writing down your wishes and thoughts, you could just say them - as if you were saying them directly to the couple themselves!
On the wedding day itself, it’s almost impossible to get more than 10 mins of time with a couple, and even if you do, they are meeting so many people that there’s a high chance they just forget what you said. The wedding day is a hectic one for the couple.
An audio guest book is not only easier and more fun for people leaving messages, but it is much nicer for the couple because it feels much more intimate and transmits emotions, which is harder to achieve with simple words (unfortunately, not all of us are poets)
The Folklory Rig
With that goal in mind, we set up the Folklory Rig - a mic + camera + light all powered by a massive battery pack and mounted on a stand. We set up the rig at the venue and people just had to come up, leave a message and carry on with the celebrations. To help people with ideas on what to say, we left little cards with questions on everyone’s table. We’re still working on the final product, but we’re very excited to see the outcome. We’re optimistic that an audio-guest book could be a standard at all weddings, just like we have wedding videos and photo albums.
To wrap up, here’s another idea for a Folklory we recorded and delivered this week, celebrating a friendship over the decades!
Below is the brief we got from the customer -
She was my first friend in primary school … I would like to honour her, our friendship and how she stands by me, all these years. So much has happened, break ups, marriages, drunken nights, family affairs, we’ve gone through so much
So if you’re looking to do something special for a friend, a family member, a spouse, or a colleague - a Folklory could be a unique way of honoring your relationship and showing them some of your love and gratitude
Until next time,
Haresh
