Back in October, we decided to try something new for Christmas. We narrowed down on the Folklory Cassette - a speaker in the shape of the good 'ol mixtape cassette with a recorded Folklory pre-loaded. The response was amazing and convinced us that this “physical” addition to the Folklory experience had a big impact. In today’s issues, we’ll share more about our learnings from this experiment.
We started talking about the cassette in late October. If someone placed an order by the 12th of November, we would make sure we deliver them the cassette by Christmas. We ended up with 12 customers who bought a total of 17 Folklories - which exceeded our expectations! For one customer, in the snapshot below, it was the cassette that pushed them over the line to purchase a Folklory.
So after we got all the orders in, it was a scramble to complete all the recordings and editing so that we could ship the cassette in time for Christmas. We were doing multiple recordings a day with people from all over the world. It was a good problem to have and those weeks were a good reminder that we had to bring in new Folklorists - something that we’ll be focusing on this year. As long we can generate the right demand, we’re pretty confident that the Folklory delivery system we’ve built will work well.
The last part of the puzzle was figuring out the packaging. We worked on putting together something simple and were quite proud of the end product. Having said that, there’s so much more we can do to make the cassette feel more premium and improve the whole unboxing experience.
To wrap up, here are some pictures of us delivering cassettes to customers across Singapore. It felt like a fun field trip day and it was nice to meet our customers in person. But the real reason we had to do this is because we had missed our shipping deadline. As the saying goes - All's well that ends well.
The cassettes were clearly and success and we want to double down this year. With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in a few months, we want to run similar campaigns. We also want to try new kinds of products that can accompany Folklory and enhance both the gifting as well as listening experience. If you have suggestions or ideas, we’re all ears!
Until next time,
The Folklory Team
